Environmental
- all timber is from sustainably managed plantations either in Australia, NZ or USA -- no rainforest timber.
- all pieces are designed to use the minimum amount of material for the maximum amount of effect.
- the volume of timber in even the largest light is minimal considering the size of the light.
- plywood is the least wasteful form of conversion of timber because the round log is peeled with knives -- no sawdust and no half rounds off the edge.
- oil finishes are organic non-toxic natural oils with no harmful solvents. wood is left natural where possible.
- where we use plastic, the material can easily be separated out and recycled under the cradle-to-cradle ethic.
- we are waiting for a suitable pla type plastic (made from plant matter) to become available in sheet form, to replace the oil-based plastic we currently, reluctantly use.
- nearly 70% of the electricity we use is renewable hydro-electric.
- many designs are packed flat and kitset for easy and low energy freighting.
- all designs are classic and intended to last, not to look out-of-date quickly.
- all assembled pieces are made to the highest craft standards for maximum longevity.
- all manufacturing is in New Zealand as we take full responsibility for the effects of this activity -- we do not pass on the problems to another cheaper country.
- all waste from the factory is sorted and sent to separate recycling facilities.
- this is just a start and we are trying to improve all the time.
- a whole new sustainably built and run workshop facility is in planning.
